I’ve been just a little obsessed with protein shakes lately. Ok, I’m pretty much always obsessed with them. If you haven’t gathered it already, I love coming up with creative smoothies recipes with flavor combos as unique as possible. However, I also like to use healthy ingredients I have on hand while putting a fun spin on the recipes. This high-in-protein shake happens to feature Mushroom Matrix, as another part of my recipe series this week that includes their Fit Matrix. In addition to Fit Matrix, I also added some other superfoods into this smoothie. There’s a company local to Colorado called KOLAT and they make Superfood Fusions in the form of nut butters that come in 4 different flavors. For this recipe, I used their Cherry Vanilla Almond to add protein, healthy fat and a whole list of other nutrients. Just to name a few, KOLAT’s superfood fusions contain vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, Biotin, Folic Acid, Pantothenic Acid, C, D2, E, K. I doubt that your standard jar of almond butter has any of those in it!

I don’t drink coffee every single day, but when I do I gravitate towards organic and fair trade varieties. These are not only healthier options, but they are also much more ethically sound and sustainable. I also used Sprout Living’s Chocolate Maca powder in this recipe, which is a favorite of mine for sure. I love the fact that it has such a malted chocolate taste that makes any smoothie taste like a milk chocolate milkshake. Plus, I can’t complain about the added protein either. As someone who does a lot of smoothies, it’s so nice to have an easy way to get in extra protein, fats and other nutrients that I don’t get out of my all-fruit smoothies.

Go ahead, make this shake. I know you want to! Even if you don’t have the same ingredients like the superfood nut butters or mocha cold brew coffee, there are simple substitutions that you can make. However, if you’re looking to try some new ingredients to supercharge your smoothies, the ones that I mentioned in this post are some of my favorites! I think sometimes it’s worth it to make a splurge on food purchases. Especially if they taste great, add extra nutrients into your diet (Vitamin B12 being the big one), and give you more energy!

Mocha Cherry Maca Protein Shake
Serves 1
A Black Forest Cake-inspired treat with added energizers like cold brew coffee, cacao, maca, and mushroom powder.

Ingredients
  1. 1/2 cup Mocha Chameleon Cold Brew
  2. 1/2 cup vanilla non-dairy milk
  3. 2 scoops Epic Protein: Chocolate Maca
  4. 1-2 tsp Mushroom Matrix FIT
  5. 1 heaping Tbs Kolat Cherry Vanilla Almond, or other almond butter
  6. 1 frozen banana
  7. 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  8. 1-2 dates, or sweetener to taste
  9. ice
Instructions
  1. Place non-dairy milk, dates and nut butter into a blender and mix until smooth. Add in the other ingredients until completely mixed, and taste for sweetness. Add extra ice or sweetener if needed. Pour into one or two glasses to share, top with cherries and cacao nibs and enjoy!

    This sounds amazing! I don’t use frozen cherries very often, but now I want to go out and buy a bag 🙂

      Do you like fresh cherries? If you can find some, I think they would have an even more intense fruity flavor!
